Why do I need to protect exterior wood?
You should protect your exterior wood against the elements because over time, UV rays grey the wood and water can cause splitting and cracking. A Ronseal Woodstain colours, protects and keeps it looking at its best.

Does a decking stain give a different finish to a decking oil?
Yes. A stain sits on top of the deck giving a more opaque finish and therefore covers up some of the woodgrain . An oil penetrates into the wood giving a more natural finish and allows the woodgrain to show through.

Why do I need to protect my deck?
Decking looks great when it's first laid but it does need protecting from the elements. UV rays grey the wood over time and water can cause it to swell, crack and split. Protecting your deck with a coating such as a stain, oil or protector revives the colour and keeps it looking like new.

What's the difference between a floor oil and a floor varnish
Basically, a varnish sits on the surface of the wood whereas an oil penetrates the wood to replenish the natural oils. A varnish gives far superior protection than an oil.

What's the difference between a floor wax and a floor varnish?
The main difference is the finish. A wax has a softer feel to it and results an a more natural look. Unlike other floor waxes, ours is just as tough as our Diamond Floor Varnish meaning you get beauty and protection. The best of both worlds.

Can they be spray applied?
Yes. All of our Eco preservers can be applied with a Power Sprayer. It's by far the quickest and easiest way to treat large areas.

What is the difference between a stain and an oil?
Both protect the wood. Oils give a more natural finish soaking into the wood, however they do need more maintenance. Stains have a more opaque finish with a greater depth of colour and giving longer lasting protection.

What is a primer?
Think of it as a solid base. You apply it to the surface before the top coat paint. Priming makes the top coats more durable. It helps the top coat stick properly to the surface and gives extra protection to the surface being painted.

Speed. Spraying makes it quick and easy to apply plus there are no brushes to clean up after.

Can I use these on floors?
No. You need a varnish specifically for floors. We recommend you use Ronseal Diamond Hard Floor Varnish for flooring as it's more hardwearing and gives long lasting protection.

How should I prepare the wood before using Ronseal wood filler products?
Scrape out any loose material in the hole using a filling knife and then lightly sand the surface in the direction of the grain.

What makes them Eco?
Two things. Firstly, their unique waterbased formula contains less petrochemicals than standard solvent based preservers. Secondly, reduced VOCs making it better for the environment.

What's BBA certification?
It stands for British Board of Agreement. It's an Independent body that certifies that Ronseal 5 Year Woodstain delivers 5 year protection.

What's faster, a power or a pump sprayer?
Our Power Sprayer is our fastest method of spray application. To make it even quicker, the Spray or Brush Fencelife now clips directly to our Power Sprayer. So it cuts out pouring and speeds up cleaning.

Why should I choose a sprayable product?
Speed. Spraying is by far the quickest and easiest way to colour and protect your fence. It's up to 10 times faster than a brush. In fact, you can treat each fence panel in as little as two minutes.

Do waxes and oils protect?
A little. Waxes and oils offer a low level of protection. For the ultimate protection for interior wood try one of our interior varnishes.

What is silver guard technology ?
It's clever stuff. Silver guard technology uses silver's antibacterial qualities. Its slow release formulation delivers long lasting protection and kills E Coli and MRSA immediately.

What's the difference between a wood stain and an outdoor varnish?
That's easy. Woodstain contains higher levels of pigmentation to give protection against greying by UV rays. So, compared to clear outdoor varnishes, it protects for longer.
