Painting Exterior Woodwork

Painting exterior wood can be intimidating, but once you know the steps involved, it doesn’t have to be. Here are the easy steps you need to follow:

Preparation:

  1. Sand the wood down thoroughly

Start by sanding down the joinery of your exterior woodwork with fine-grit sandpaper to ensure the surface is smooth before painting.

  1. Clean the wood.

Removing any dust, dirt or grease with a damp cloth helps remove any grease or dirt build-up which could interfere with a successful finish when you paint.

  1. Fill in any holes or cracks with wood filler.

If there are any gaps between sections of woodwork, use a wood filler product to overfill them for the best results.

If you're using our 10 Year Weatherproof Wood Paint, you don't need a primer and can go straight to painting!

Painting exterior wood:

  1. Give your paint a thorough stir

This will help get rid of any lumps or bumps.

  1. Apply two even coats of paint

Be sure to wait for the paint to dry in between coats. If you're using 10 Year Weatherproof Wood Paint, you need to wait 4 hours between the first and second coat.

Your exterior woodwork is now ready to be admired and enjoyed!

By following these simple steps and using our easy to apply 10 Year Exterior Wood Paint, you can achieve a great-looking result on all your exterior woodwork. For help on how to paint a wooden front door, please check out our guide dedicated to how to paint exterior wooden doors.
